For New Hires

Your Immediate Attention is Required

Welcome to AAP. Your appointment is now in Workday, the Cornell HR system. There are a number of things you are required to do before your first day at work:

Activate Your NetID (required)

Once your appointment is in the system, you will receive a NetID activation email with step-by-step instructions. Your NetID is the key to all Cornell systems and services. If you do not receive an email within two days of your appointment, please contact the Business Service Center (BSC) located at 140 East Sibley Hall.

Onboarding (required)

  • Set up two-step login for Workday
  • To schedule your onboarding appointment, log into Workday and select "Schedule an Onboarding Appointment."

New faculty appointments are finalized at the Onboarding Center located off campus at 395 Pine Tree Road in the East Hill Office Building, accessible by the TCAT bus route 82 from campus.

New hires who do not attend onboarding, including those that are not on the Ithaca campus, are required to complete the following:

  • Set up two-step login for Workday
  • Complete steps in your Workday inbox including:
    • Complete the I-9 Form
    • Review and sign Responsibility@Cornell (required to keep your appointment active, please complete no later than five business days after your appointment date). Once you electronically sign the form in Workday, you will need to complete the online program by following these instructions.
    • Review and sign the Inventions and Related Property Rights Assignment Form (PDF) (required to keep your appointment active, please complete no later than five business days after your appointment date).

Benefits Enrollment (for benefits-eligible new hires)

There is a 60-day limit to sign up for certain core benefits (from your start date listed in your appointment letter), including health insurance, so don't delay.

  • Please contact the university benefits office directly for benefits-related questions.

Cornell Email Sign-up

Once you have your NetID you can sign up for Cornell email. Office 365 is the university's email system for faculty and staff.

Cornell ID Card

Your Cornell ID card identifies you as a current member of the Cornell community. Depending on the services that you sign up for, your ID card may be used as an electronic door key and grant you access to facilities on campus, fitness centers, libraries, and transportation services. Visit the University Registrar's Office located at B7 Day Hall, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to get your ID card.

Faculty Profile Forms

All new faculty need to complete a faculty profile form, which will be posted on the college website.

Foreign Nationals

If you are a foreign national, please visit the Foreign National Information System (FNIS) regarding a possible tax exemption. Please note, you must submit FNIS information for each new appointment.

A social security number (SSN) is required to submit your information. To request your SSN, apply at the Ithaca Social Security Administration Office. It will take about two weeks to receive your card and you will need a U.S. address to have the card mailed. Bring your SSN card to the BSC contact, as we are required to have your SSN on file. Details on how to obtain a SSN are also available at Cornell's International Services, Office of Global Learning.

Purchasing Information

Per Cornell policy, purchases for class needs should be initiated via a request to the department rather than paid out of pocket for reimbursement. Cornell often receives discounts/savings that may not be available to you if you buy directly, including sales tax exemption. Approved Campus to Campus (C2C) bus reservations should also be paid directly by the department.

If you do purchase out of pocket, save the original itemized receipt and submit to the BSC within 30 days of the purchase.

Transportation Services

Cornell's Department of Transportation and Delivery Services is committed to offering a range of options to make your commute easy, economical, efficient, healthy, and sustainable.

The TCAT bus service provides free public transportation for Cornell employees through your Cornell ID card at the fare box, Monday–Friday.

AAP Name Pronunciation Tool

Correctly pronouncing each other's names is about respect and fostering an environment of inclusion, care, and belonging. The AAP Name Pronunciation Tool allows students, faculty, and staff to record their own names through our online platform. Name recordings will be available in this system by searching with a single NetID or a comma- or semicolon-separated list of class rosters. Faculty and staff who have participated will have the added option of linking the audio recording to their AAP web profiles found in the directories. To begin recording your name, please log into the portal using the link below with your netid and password.

Student Services

Located at B56 Sibley, the Office of Student Services provides information, support, and programming to encourage student success in conjunction with faculty who serve as advisors. Please reach out if you have a question or concern about any student you serve.

Important resources for faculty in supporting students.

  • Student Disability Support Services has a faculty portal. In the portal, you can see the students in your courses and any accommodation they might have. Please check this portal and remember that accomodations are not retroactive and the responsibility lies with the student in talking with you about their needs in your course.
  • Cornell has a way to notify Student Services about any student you have an academic or other concern about. Please complete the Academic Concern Form when a student has a pattern of absences, poor grades, or any other concern you might have. This form allows advisors in Student Services to partner with you to support any student who needs additional academic support or connections to university resources.

Teaching Resources

The Office of Student Services supports faculty in their role as instructors by advising on course and class set-up, course enrollment options and timelines, grading policies and procedures, credit hour requirements, independent study guidelines, and academic policy.

Advising Resources

Tenured, tenure-track, and multiyear appointees generally have advising responsibilities. Advising assignments are determined by the academic department. The Office of Student Services implements the advising system, processes advisor changes, and develops advising resources in collaboration with the academic departments. Advisors access their up-to-date advisee list in the Advisor Center.

University Resources

The Office of the Provost works to maintain and enhance excellence in teaching, scholarship, and outreach.

The Office of the Dean represents the interests of the faculty to the trustees and administration, as well as ensures that the faculty is fully informed about campus.
