Wall-ness

The walls of Bushwick, Brooklyn, emerge as a canvas for art. The proposed Artist's Collective aims to critically challenge the familiar typology of a "white-wall gallery," by utilizing the architectural properties of "walls" to generate a series of sequential frameworks that blur the boundary between street art and commissioned art. Conceptualized from preexisting partition walls, the walls adopt specific characteristics that become intimate and respective to its defining program, alternating as a catalyst for light, air, circulation, and structure. Through the interplay of scale and materiality, the walls partake unique performative and functional qualities that mediate in between exterior and interior conditions. This results in the breakdown of a monolithic form, promoting access in both horizontal and vertical directions, integrating art as part of its multidirectional choreography.
