About the Exhibition
The classroom is the cellular level of the university, and the work of creating a diverse and equitable institution begins in our classrooms. Over the span of 2022–23, the Department Chairs from Architecture, Art, and Planning worked alongside the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Associate Dean for Diversity and Equity to develop a class that responds to the needs identified by students and faculty in the college's living action plan, inputs from alumni, and university-wide conversations on creating discipline-specific courses to meet a forthcoming undergraduate educational requirement on race and equity.
In the fall of 2023, AAP launched Creating Justice: The Worlds We Make. The class examined structural racism, colonialism, injustice, bias, and their manifestations through the lens of architecture, art, and urban studies. It brought together instructors from the fields of art, architecture, and planning and all first-year students across AAP to explore the current state of their disciplines and begin to develop the skills necessary to work toward an equitable future.
This exhibition shares examples of instructional content and assignments from the class and highlights the work of the invited guest lecturers who all model the values of creating justice by creatively working towards building and practicing a more just, equitable, and loving world.
