Queen's Artist Space

In many ways, the artists' movement in New York City during the 1960s reversed the typical typology of artist spaces from a big white box to an ever-changing, contextual space for artists to display their work within.

Located in Queens, the old industrial site has four different edge conditions – one overlooking a beach, one looking at the Manhattan skyline, one facing the neighborhood of queens, and one adjacent to Socrates Sculpture Park. This proposal aims to privilege each view by directing a volume towards each edge. The rotation of the volumes activates all surfaces of the building so that walls, ceilings, floors, undercrofts, and roofs can be utilized as potential indoor and outdoor art spaces. The views are intended to be seen as a backdrop to the art and encourage users to find art in the environment around us. The steel structure building relies on moment frames and angled columns, which intersect the spaces and alter the perception of the framed views.
