Abstract

Florian Idenburg, founding partner of SO–IL, and Seba Mendez of Tankhouse come together to discuss their collaboration on a radically innovative housing project in Brooklyn. Their project, 144 Vanderbilt in Brooklyn, is the third installment in a series of condominium developments that aims to create dense, social, and communally oriented multifamily housing, imbued with the intrinsic qualities of private homes: abundant light, fresh air, outdoor space, and privacy. These goals are facilitated through a similar series of moves—exterior circulation, unit-scale articulation, communal roofs, generous outdoor space—while adapting the architecture to a unique site, complicated zoning, and a historic neighborhood. In this joint talk, Idenburg and Mendez will explore how rethinking traditional typologies, material strategies, and community-driven design can address urban challenges of affordability, sustainability, and human connection.
