Arden Conine: Feel the Ground
Exhibition Abstract
Feel the Ground by Arden Conine (B.F.A. '26) will be an ode to the disruption of our often monotonous lifestyles through the act of playing outdoors. The space will be constructed to consider the repetitive, industrial, confined stream of human life today and break its rigidity through humor, play, and the spontaneous mystery of nature. Skiing, hiking, biking, and surfing are all formalized ways in which we play outside, and Conine's work will illustrate and dive into the significance of these activities.
The work considers questions like: How can we as people play in the environment around us? What does this "play" do in building our relationship with the environment? How do we keep ourselves learning and questioning while in harmony with nature? How do our bodies allow us to explore, and what are the technologies we use in mimicking nature? What drives us as humans to the extremes of speed and endurance in these sports? How do we continue to practice and experience gratitude towards our bodies and the environment we inhabit?
A range of mediums will be used in the gallery, including print, textiles, handmade paper, ceramics, drawings, and more. Overall, Conine's work is bold and playful. The exhibit aims to inspire its audience to be outside and use their bodies to their full potential more often while also adding a moment of play to their day on a smaller scale just through the experience of the gallery.
