Renewing Sibley Dome

Supporting our core spaces.

The heart of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, Sibley Dome serves as the iconic centerpiece of AAP on the Cornell Arts Quad. To continue its enduring legacy, the renovation of Sibley Dome is among the college's important capital projects during the To Do The Greatest Good campaign. Its renovation and redesign will create new programmatic spaces to meet academic needs and priorities, while renewing the building's vital status at Cornell.

The renovation will create much-needed learning spaces, including an auditorium, studio, and collaborative commons for students, as well as provide a home for the college's newest initiatives, such as the Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities and the multicollege Department of Design Tech. Creating a dynamic hub for the college under the dome, which has always been iconic for AAP students and alumni, will be transformative, enabling cross-disciplinary collaborative spaces for the entire AAP community and meeting critical needs for the college and university.

A Vital Hub for AAP and Cornell

"Sibley Dome has the potential to be a renewed and transformative vital hub for AAP and Cornell. A priority for the renewal, renovation, and transformation is to provide greater opportunity to advance our academic mission by creating critical spaces to gather, learn, research, and collaborate. This is central to our community and the future of the college as we continue to collectively recognize the importance of coming together as scholars and creative practitioners across disciplines to build a better world."

Renovations to Revitalize Sibley Dome as Vital Hub for AAP

Featuring a 100-seat "hanging" auditorium, a collaborative commons area, and flexible studios and spaces for the Department of Design Tech and the Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities, the adaptive reuse project celebrates the 1902 building's historic elements while giving it new life within the college.

The History of Sibley Hall

An Architectural Evolution

Sibley Hall was originally built in the late 1800s to provide a home for the Sibley College of Mechanical Engineering. Named for Hiram Sibley of Rochester, New York, one of the university's original trustees, the building began as a single structure (now West Sibley Hall), and over the next 30 years expanded to include the east wing, and eventually the central building and dome structure that joined the two separate wings together.
