Hanxi Wang
Hanxi Wang is an architect and urban geographer whose work uses an interdisciplinary approach to question dominant narratives of power and agency within the urban environment. In particular, she is interested in informal practices of urban ecology and the complex, sometimes paradoxical ways in which their practitioners negotiate, adopt, or subvert top-down structures of governance to create alternative visions of the city. Her current research project, Ruralizing Urban Wastelands — Homesteads and Subversive Metabolisms in China's Growing Cities, investigates the subversive influence of displaced farmers in the wastelands of China's rapid urbanization and the potential of informal practices in creating strategies of urban metabolism. The first part of this research, conducted at the School of Geography and the Environment in the University of Oxford, was presented as a paper at the 2022 Royal Geographical Society Annual International Conference in Newcastle.
Hanxi Wang is a licensed architect and LEED accredited professional with more than three years of practice experience in sustainable design in New York City specializing in commercial and residential towers. She has multiple teaching and research experiences at Cornell University and the University of Oxford. She holds a B.Arch. from Cornell University and an M.Sc. in Nature, Society and Environmental Governance from the University of Oxford.
