Abstract:

In a conversation with CRP Professor Neema Kudva, Anant Maringanti will explore how the Hyderabad Urban Lab (HUL) was created, the context within which it continues to grow, and the unique strengths that an institution such as HUL brings to engaging the issues faced by residents of fast-growing cities of the Global South like Hyderabad. Established in 2012, HUL is a multidisciplinary research center committed to advancing southern urbanism both as theory and practice. This work is broadly organized in three categories: Hyderabad Urban Lab School dedicated to the development of new pedagogies; Khidki (Window), a collaborative media platform dedicated to transgressing disciplinary boundaries to curate and archive economic, cultural and social histories of places — in this instance, the Deccan region; and Urban Observatory, a platform for facilitating project-oriented interventions, research and advocacy, and spatial data analysis.
