Exhibition Abstract

Into the Deep End explores the process of digging beneath the surface to excavate increasingly tangled answers. This mental archeological dig is what higher learning can feel like. And it's also the task that every M.F.A. student faces from the beginning of the first year through the completion of a thesis.

This exhibition brings together recent works from all 11 first and second-year students in Cornell's M.F.A. in Creative Visual Arts Program. Working across a wide range of media, these works embody the program's interdisciplinary ethos, pondering questions that run the gamut from an individual's place in history to the role that art should play in the gallery and beyond.

Each exhibiting artist dips a toe into multiple methodological pools. Performance, digital media, ceramics, and painting all dispatch in unison here, with no hierarchy between handcrafted and concept-based modalities. Into the Deep End invites you to push further into murky depths and swim toward the unknown.
