Amongst the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, the village of Fredvang stands out as one of the most important cod fishing locations in the region. It is home to the last remaining major fishing company in the area and is active year round with the fishing industry, cultural activity, and a rapidly increasing amount of tourism. However, the built spaces along the waterfront are in need of redesign and revitalization in order to establish a built environment that speaks to the importance of the village while also connecting different users to the productive nature of the place.

By introducing three new architectural components to the site — the bar, the tower, and the market — this design aims to resolve the current ambiguity of the site's experience while linking to Fredvang's rich industrial history. This intervention on the existing architecture of Fredvang's center will allow the waterfront to become a destination in Lofoten for residents, workers, and tourists alike. The restructured village will not only have the capacity to support the growing tourist population but will also allow the waterfront to thrive as an integral town center for Fredvang, providing new public functions for locals. The architecture works to enhance the existing structure and functions, as well as to introduce new elements that reflect the vernacular in both their aesthetics and their use.
