As a part of AAP NYC's fall Urban Design Studio, second-year M.R.P. and M.L.A. students devised a simulation tool to foster community engagement for increasing affordable housing on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The site for the project, New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA) Baruch campus, provided an opportunity for dialogue regarding equitable redevelopment. The tool, named Envision Baruch, consisted of a physical model of the site where players assume various roles, such as resident, developer, NYCHA, and the city. These players must negotiate and collaborate with each other in order to reach consensus regarding development decisions. Throughout the session, real-time financial and social implications were shown on an interactive spreadsheet. Instead of a final product or design, the goal of the studio was to create a replicable framework and platform for community engagement.
