Alexandro Segade: Selves Among Others: An Artist's Talk

Alexandro Segade is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the formation of collective identities through collaborative performance, video, writing, and drawing. His solo work has appeared at the Broad, REDCAT, and LAXART in Los Angeles; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; TBA Festival in Portland, Oregon; in New York City at MoMA PS1, Movement Research at Judson Church, and Park Avenue Armory; and Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Annandale-On-Hudson, New York. Since 2000, Segade has worked with Malik Gaines and Jade Gordon in the performance art collective My Barbarian, which has received grants and awards from Creative Capital, Art Matters, the Foundation for Contemporary Art, and United States Artists, and will be the subject of a survey exhibition at the Whitney Museum in 2020. In 2014, Segade cofounded A.R.M., with Malik Gaines and Robbie Acklen, a collective exploring queer. Segade has been artist-in-residence at the Park Avenue Armory, Recess, BOFFO, and LMCC, in New York, and the Rauschenberg Foundation on Captiva, Florida, among others. Segade's writing on art, comics, culture, and performance has been published in Artforum, Yale Theater Journal, and Queer (Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art, 2016). He is discipline cochair of Film/Video at Bard College M.F.A., and distinguished lecturer in Art and Art History at Hunter College. Segade is cohost and coproducer of queer comics podcast Super Gay!
