Policies and Guidelines
Eligibility Requirements
All spring 2018 AAP NYC participants are eligible to apply for AAP Cornell Tech housing through an online application process. Rooms will be available on a single-occupancy basis only. We cannot accommodate every student, therefore housing is not guaranteed to all that apply. Review the process outlined below to learn more.
Application Process
-
The application will be available at 12 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, October 18. You will be emailed a link to the application in advance, and the application will go live at 12 p.m. EDT on October 18. We will ONLY accept applications submitted on or after 12 p.m. EDT.
-
Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The application will remain open until all spaces are filled. Any additional requests received after the available spaces have been filled will be placed on a waitlist.
-
You will receive a letter via email indicating if you have been accepted into Cornell Tech housing. You will receive an email if you have been placed on the waitlist.
-
You will be required to commit to Cornell Tech housing by signing an AAP NYC Housing License Agreement. Upon acceptance, you will receive a link to the agreement. You will have one week from the time of acceptance to officially commit to Cornell Tech housing.
-
Accepted students will complete a brief housing questionnaire. We will make housing placements based on the questionnaire and inform everyone individually of placement.
Cornell Tech Housing Information
Cost: Rent will be charged at a rate of $1,500 per month — including utilities, Wi-Fi, and broadcast television — for the specific academic term in which you are a resident. This equates to $6,000 for the spring semester (four months).
While the rate charged by AAP is nominally higher on a per-month basis than that quoted by Cornell Tech, one cannot rent from Cornell Tech by the month for a four-month semester; the cheapest option available directly from the House is a six-month term, costing between $7,800 and $8,400, depending on floor level. In contrast, AAP is charging $6,000 for a four-month semester and $3,500 for a 2.33-month summer term, regardless of floor level. We believe that shorter occupancy terms, matched to the academic calendar, with somewhat higher per-month cost but significantly lower overall cost are a better deal for our students than the lower per-month, higher overall cost alternative. In addition, AAP's rent includes electric utilities.
The total income that AAP will receive from the four-month spring and fall terms and 2.33-month summer term is less than the annual rent and utility costs that we will be paying for the units, so there is a modest subsidy provided by the college.
Term: The Cornell Tech spring semester occupancy period is January 22 – May 22, 2018. The license agreement will be for one private bedroom (full-sized bed) in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. The apartment also includes a living room and kitchen.
