Exhibition Abstract

Esparto is the teacher. Orb Weaver is an exhibition developed in response to Mia Brown-Seguin's connection with Pulpi, Spain, as esparto guided her through the desert and through the deep history of weaving in the Andalusia region. Woven esparto, pieces of Spain, and Brown-Seguin's observations as a resident at the Montemero Art Residency will be on display in the Olive Tjaden and Experimental Galleries. This exhibition incorporates short films, sculptural pieces, and audio tracks to explore notions of feminity, transformation, rituals, land stewardship, and cyclical patterns present in nature. The body of work on display is inspired by orb weaver spiders' webs, mud wasp nests, wombs, celestial syzygy, ecdysis, and a presence within the heart of our four compass directions.

Exhibitor Biography

Mia Brown-Seguin (B.F.A '24) is a visual artist, born in Massachusetts and based in New York State, focused on site-specific installations and contextual art. She is inspired by human relationships with the environment, working from observations of life cycles, identity, and memory. Brown-Seguin considers her intimate connection with place, as well as the socio-political context of the female body within the landscape. In her practice, she uses photography and traditional methods of craft, along with fiber and book-related media, including papermaking, weaving, and alternative photography processes. By incorporating natural materials and found objects, she challenges scientific documentation and redefines the archival preconceptions of the art object.
