Overview

The Director of Facilities serves as the college strategic partner, with a dual reporting relationship to Central Facilities to ensure alignment in accordance with Cornell processes. This role provides leadership for the management, maintenance, and stewardship of physical spaces, facilities operations, and material practice facilities in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP). The person in this role will:

  • Develop and cultivate partnership with zone service providers to ensure work is completed in alignment and in accordance with Cornell processes and vision.
  • Direct and manage strategic implementation maintenance operations while cultivating strong partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Develop recommendations and strategies to implement maintenance activities in collaboration with central Facilities for strategic planning and alignment.  
  • Develop short- and long-term strategies for annual and periodic building and systems condition assessments while advocating and prioritizing needs for routine and planned maintenance including forecasting maintenance needs in collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies in alignment with Central Facilities and University goals and mission for safe and consistent practices.
  • Develop project feasibility and determine priorities for assigned college/unit. Navigate relationship with key stakeholders to prioritize needs and direct project alignment to college/unit and central facilities goals. 
  • Lead vendor and community relationships.
  • Develop annual budgets and capital planning process for project plans while negotiation expenses and leading strategies for cost efficiencies.
  • Provide leadership and expertise for the mid-sized to large college/unit in the management and use of existing facilities, and in short- and long-term planning for the renovation of existing facilities or the construction of new facilities.
  • Manage the day-to-day maintenance operations and project activity for AAP (including overseeing the effective delivery of all general facilities operations, as well as supporting the research and material practice facilities and technical classrooms), and collaborating with other college functional units (e.g., Information Technology, Communications) to ensure effective stewardship of shared resources.

Key success criteria: Possesses full spectrum of facilities management expertise and stellar customer service management, proven solid decision and critical thinking skills, demonstrated ability to develop engaged teams, and the ability to maintain effective communication and strong relationships while managing multiple priorities.

AAP Facilities Details

AAP's facilities in Ithaca include 6 buildings, totaling ~200,0000 net square feet. In addition to more typical classroom and office spaces, the facilities also house extensive studio spaces and Materials Practice Facilities (wood shop, metal shop, digital fabrication, printmaking, darkroom, etc.).

AAP's facilities in New York City include space at 26 Broadway (the landmarked Standard Oil Building), and at the Tata Innovation Center on the Cornell Tech Campus at Roosevelt Island.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management or Construction Technology or related field with at least seven years experience in facilities management or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The successful individual must:

  • be able to make sound decisions and navigate through ambiguous situations. 
  • be experienced with spreadsheet, database and project software required (such as MS Excel, Access, Project).
  • have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
  • successfully complete a background check.

Additionally, this person will be:

  • an experienced leader or trainer of others, with a demonstrated ability to sustain an open, inclusive, and collaborative environment where all perspectives are solicited and valued.
  • able to advocate, build relationships, foster teamwork as well as opportunities for individual growth, and lead by example.
  • a great communicator (exhibiting professionalism in spoken and written encounters), with the desire to provide excellent service to all people and to empower a strong team environment.
  • proficiency with Cornell-specific policies and procedures is not required at the time of hire, but the ability to quickly master these, and to continually update this knowledge base, will be crucial to ongoing success.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • experience in a University or Institutional Facilities Management environment is a plus.
  • advanced degree or additional professional experience in a related field.
  • prior experience performing facilities-related work in a large-scale or highly complex environment.
  • previous experience working in an academic or campus setting.
  • project management or project lead experience.
  • background in art, architecture, city and regional planning, design technology, and/or real estate would be beneficial.

Benefits

The pay range is $128,081.00–$156,543.00

Noted pay ranges reflect the potential pay opportunity for each job profile. The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • prior relevant work or industry experience
  • education level to the extent education is relevant to the position
  • unique applicable skills
  • academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflect 9-month annual salary)
