In addition to teaching, planning, and development courses, Oliver coaches students involved in real estate and urban design competitions and coordinates the annual Case Study in Urban Development Symposium. For three decades, prior to coming to Cornell, he was a principal of his own firms and worked for larger master-planned community developers. Earlier in his career, he worked for municipal and state government agencies, including the City of New York and the Governor's Office of Planning and Research in California. Oliver also serves as a director and treasurer of the California-based Center for Natural Lands Management and as an adviser to the Institute of Transportation Studies at University of California–Davis. Professional affiliations include the American Planning Association, the Urban Land Institute and Lambda Alpha, the honorary land economics society. Oliver is a founder and emeritus member of the California Planning Roundtable. He serves as a board member of the Center Natural Lands Management, a not-for-profit organization that manages open space and habitat lands throughout California and in the State of Washington. He received his B.A. in urban studies at San Francisco State University in 1970, and his M.A. in urban planning from UCLA in 1974.
