Stephan Schmidt

Stephan Schmidt's research interests concern the social, economic, and political context of environmental, design and land use planning, and decision-making. His three areas of focus are the formation of local environmental and land use policy, the social geography of public space provision — in particular the increasing use of the private sector to provide for public space, and the changing land use planning processes and patterns in Germany as a result of demographic, institutional, and political economic impacts. He is also interested in urbanization patterns in sub-Saharan Africa. He recently edited "The production of public space," a special issue of the Journal of Urban Design, with Jeremy Nemeth.

Schmidt has a masters in landscape architecture from the University of Washington, where his thesis was published in the Journal of Urban Design. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University, where his dissertation on open space preservation has been published in the Journal of Planning Education and Research, Journal of Planning History, and Urban Affairs Review. He is affiliated with the Atkins Center for a Sustainable Future, Cornell Population Program, Institute for European Studies, and the Institute for African Development.
