Postdoctoral Associate in Just and Equitable Cities

The Center invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in Just and Equitable Cities.

The ideal candidate would have research, teaching, and practice interests related to informal settlements in sub-Saharan African cities. Topics of interest are informal settlement upgrading, housing, land tenure, and access to infrastructure and services. Student Internships

Spring 2026

New York City Department of Environmental Protection

The intern will work on collaborative projects between the Center and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP). The intern will contribute to the development of internal planning studies around stormwater management/public space improvements and water conservation, as well as assist with the production of outward-facing communication material. Tasks will include: data visualization, geospatial analysis, and graphic design, as well as developing and editing agency materials. If interested, please apply on Workday

New York City Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice

The intern will work on collaborative projects between the Center and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice (MOCEJ). The student worker will support the production, maintenance, and optimization of urban climate change and environmental justice geospatial products and open data tools.

WE ACT for Environmental Justice

The Urban Climate and Environmental Justice intern will work on collaborative projects between the Center and WE ACT for Environmental Justice (WE ACT). The intern will assist with analysis and mapping of cooling centers that help address individual and household exposure to extreme heat, as well as contributing to proposed recommendations for future research and action. Summer 2026

RISE

The selected interns will support a participatory effort to reimagine the bayside area of Far Rockaways, Queens NYC. Working in support of RISE, the Center is seeking two student interns to assist with community engagement, including planning and implementing two community workshops, and the development of a conceptual plan for the bayside area of Far Rockaways. The work will build on existing community plans to reimagine how existing industrial sites and the surrounding area could be repurposed to support the well-being and aspirations of local residents. Slum Dwellers International 

This internship is part of the Center’s Just and Equitable Cities initiative and strategic partnership with Slum Dwellers International (SDI). Selected students will be placed in Accra, Ghana; Harare, Zimbabwe; or Nairobi, Kenya. Applicants must have an interest in working with urban poor communities in informal settlements and be willing to support the vision and mission of SDI. 

Activities may include informal settlement and local government outreach; data collection, analysis, and visualization; report, proposal, and publication preparation; and participation in other related activities as needed by SDI.
