Through the report, students suggested a 10- to 20-year plan for four key corridors in Lakewood’s Ward 4, which shares a municipal boundary with Cleveland along the W. 117th Street corridor. The students’ work bridged this boundary through innovative and resilient strategies for economic development, public space, and streetscape interventions as a way of responding to regional and local needs.
Key strategies for improving Corridor 1 were motivated by connecting fragmented land uses and included new housing options for residents of varying ages, sustainable public spaces with stormwater best practices, and improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.
A main focus for Corridor 2 was to bridge the gap between Lakewood and Cleveland, which students proposed to do through workforce housing and transit-related development, as well as a new industrial/residential/cultural hub.
Suggested work on Corridor 3 centered on transit-oriented development to leverage the Madison-W. 117th Street station and on phytoremediation of a seven-acre brownfield.
For Corridor 4, students proposed development of new housing and public spaces and a redesign of Madison Park to create “Library Plaza.”
