Carl Ostendarp

Carl Ostendarp is an artist involved with pictorial abstraction in the context of painting and installation. Since 1989 he has engaged in 40 solo national and international museum and gallery exhibitions as well as more than 170 group exhibitions. Recent exhibitions include Die Bilder Der Brüder at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany; Carl Ostendarp: Greatest Hits at the Heilbronn Kunstverein, Germany; Everything Falls Faster than an Anvil at Pace Gallery, London and Carl Ostendarp at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York City. His work is included in the following public collections among others: The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Walker Art Center, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum Ludwig, Germany; Museum für Moderne Kunst, Germany; Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland; Fogg Art Museum at Harvard and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven among others. He has taught at NYU, Tyler, Rutgers, SVA, and The Cooper Union prior to his 21 years at Cornell University where he is an Associate Professor. Ostendarp received his B.F.A. from Boston University and his M.F.A. from Yale University.

  • ART 2201 Painting IIStudies the language of painting through color, form, materials, and techniques. Aspects of traditional and modern pictorial composition are studied including proportion, space, and color theory through the representation of a variety of subjects.
  • ART 4001 Thesis IThis course continues the independent studio research and production of the Advanced Practice course to prepare students for ART 4002: Thesis II.  During Thesis I, students begin to research, develop, and clarify their thesis proposals through dialogues, readings, and critiques with members of the Core Thesis Faculty. Emphasis is on deepening awareness of the intention and reading of the work and situating individual interests within and against historical, theoretical, and conceptual contexts.
  • ART 4002 Thesis IIThis course is the final B.F.A. studio semester in which students develop and present an independent body of work that may take the form of an exhibition or some other project. Students will work with members of the Core Thesis Faculty to define and refine the positions formulated within each work and to foster the ability to speak about one's own work as well as the work of others. Emphasis is placed on developing strategies of productive self-criticality to inform their work both during and beyond the thesis semester.
