Alexandro Segade

Alexandro Segade's interdisciplinary world-building projects envision a spectacular queer utopia, complicated by radical ambivalence. Often working in art collectives, Segade explores the construction of group identities through multiple media, including video, performance, writing, drawing, comics. Segade cofounded My Barbarian with Malik Gaines and Jade Gordon, an art collective included in the Whitney Biennial, two Performa Biennials, the subject of a solo exhibition at the New Museum in 2016, and a Whitney survey exhibition in 2021. A.R.M. (A. Segade, R. Acklen, M. Gaines) recuperates gay cultural forms in projects at the Whitney Museum, The High Line, New York City;  BOFFO, Fire Island; Espacio Odeon, Bogota; DD55 Gallery, Cologne; Rogaland Kunstcenter, Stavanger, Norway. Segade's multimedia science-fiction performances Future St, Replicant vs. Separatist, and Boy Band Audition at the Park Avenue Armory and Judson Church in New York City; Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Bard College; Time-Based Art Festival, Portland, Oregon; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Vox Populi, Philadelphia; and LAXART, REDCAT, the Broad Museum, Los Angeles.  Segade's graphic novel, The Context, was published by Primary Information in May 2020, and his comics have since appeared in issues of Artforum and Creative Time Comics 2020. Segade received his B.A. in 1996 and his M.F.A. from UCLA in 2009.
