Spring 2013 studios taught by Mark Tsurumaki of LTL Architects, and Christopher and William Sharples of SHoP Architects, focused on significantly different treatments of water in and around New York City.

Tsurumaki’s Urban Swim Center studio used thermally logical site design, innovative skins, and the demands of a complex and potentially vulnerable site as catalysts for the design of an urban swimming pool sited near the historic amusement district in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

The Sharples’s studio, Storm Surge: New City Edge / Building Up the Edge, challenged students to reimagine a cross section of lower Manhattan’s waterfront in an effort to manage the delicate balance between the city’s edge, environmental challenges such as Hurricane Sandy, business expansion, and quality of life for New York City’s residents.
