No Assembly Required

What is the role of 3D prints in the design studio? As a manufacturing technology it is utilized in several industries, from the production of prosthetic body parts to the actual construction of buildings. What impact does 3D printing have on architecture? The models in this exhibition display the potential of 3D printing in the design process. By partially eliminating physical assembly from the design process, 3D prints focus architectural projects on form and formal strategies. Structural parts become volumetric, connections become continuous, and the models here raise questions on craft, tectonics, and space. As assembly becomes a conceptual matter, 3D printing also makes an impact on how three dimensionality is envisioned.

All models on display are works of current or former Cornell architecture students.
