Michelle Komie: An Introduction to Academic Book Publishing
Michelle Komie is executive editor at Princeton University Press and acquires books in art, architectural, and urban history. Titles on her list have received publication awards from the Association of Asian Studies, the College Art Association, the Foundation for Landscape Studies, the Society for American City and Regional Planning, the Society of Architectural Historians, and the Urban History Association, among others.
In this talk, Komie will provide an overview of the publishing landscape with a special emphasis on books about art, architectural, urban, and landscape history. Topics will include the types of academic book publishers, the general operations of a publisher, and the means by which books are acquired, reviewed, produced, marketed, and sold. She will also address the process of becoming an author, from preparing a book proposal, titling a project, and writing a compelling description, to thinking through such elements as illustrations, programs, permissions, and outside funding.
