Maria Park: Shelf Life

Shelf Life explores the reciprocal production of nature and culture in an installation comprised of paintings, objects, and the arrangement of objects and books on shelving. It brings together current work with works selected from the recent series Counter Nature (2010ヨ11), which presented encounters with nature against nostalgic visual conventions of landscape and the proliferation of packaged and media-disseminated images. Shelf Life questions the relative duration of our thoughts and representations of nature through a play of ideas and objects. This installation was developed in response to the exacting architecture of the Milstein Gallery space, which itself frames a courtyard garden.
