Maria Dompè: Incursions in Space

Cornell in Rome Fall 2008 Lecture Series

Maria Dompè was born in Italy, where she attended Liceo Artistico and graduated with a degree in sculpture from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma in 1982. Dompè’s “incursions in space” is how the artist defines the transformation of the environment where the work is created for and with the pre-chosen place: “an understanding between the place and its history, in a kind of intimate dialogue between the space and the artist.” Since 1990 Dompè has created 50 “incursions” — some events, some permanent installations — in various countries including Germany, Italy, India, and Japan. She has also been the recipient of many international prizes and grants.
