Dan Torop: Estuaries

Bio

Dan Torop's work has been shown in solo and group shows at numerous institutions, including the American Museum of the Moving Image, the Lynden Sculpture Garden, Derek Eller Gallery, Green Gallery, Tops Gallery, the CLUI Wendover Exhibit Hall, the San Francisco Exploratorium, and the New York Video Festival. Triple Canopy, Paper Monument, Cabinet, and other periodicals have published Torop's images and writing. He contributes code to Darktable, an open-source tool for processing photographs. Torop is coeditor of a small photo book imprint, ASMR4, and is an Assistant Professor at Cornell University. He received a B.A. in visual and environmental studies from Harvard and an M.F.A. in photography from the Yale School of Art. Prior to teaching at Cornell, Torop was a faculty member at New York University, Columbia University, Florida State University, City College, and Parsons School of Design.

Abstract

Torop's work explores earthly and digital terrains. It has ranged from photographic prints to simulations to communities of code.

Torop has worked in technologically manipulated landscapes that have been marked or remediated. These are collective spaces with the accumulated vision of many hands. The varied histories of our relationships to these places is messy and unresolved. Torop's work involves sustained attention to site, technique, tool, and community. The work is discovered through that attention.

Torop has recently worked both in the watery Ithaca region and in arid landscapes out west. His work is grounded in the conviction that the discovery of visual language through the creation of images is the fundamental work of the artist.
