John Zissovici: Google Earth: Re-thinking the City through its Image

Architecture Department Lecture Series

Google Earth is fast becoming a premiere destination, no longer merely a convenient prelude and occasional substitute to real travel, but a portal for information of encyclopedic proportions. Google Earth can appear as a dense and richly layered landscape of graphic and textual information, all potential points of access to an infinite number of web-based sites, now linked to specific geographic locations. This gravity-less, hybrid condition, where virtual buildings, information, and advertising coexist seamlessly, is an ideal laboratory and testing ground for ideas in architecture, landscape, and urbanism.
