John Kinzelberg

John Kinzelberg has more than 20 years of professional experience in real estate and private equity, including 12 years in all facets of the multifamily business including acquisitions, dispositions, development, finance, and asset and property management. To date, Kinzelberg has acquired more than 3,800 multifamily units with an aggregate cost of over $420 million.

In 2012, Kinzelberg cofounded Highgate Capital Group, a private real estate value investment firm focused on the acquisition and asset management of a diversified portfolio of multifamily properties located in the top growth markets across the country. The firm has acquired more than 1,200 units with an aggregate cost of $71 million.

Prior to forming Highgate Capital Group, in 2006 Kinzelberg joined Waterton Associates, a national multifamily investment advisor for private institutions. The firm sponsored joint venture investment funds with some of the largest pension funds, endowments, and Wall Street banks in the country. He served as a vice president of acquisitions, investing more than $141 million of equity in seven multifamily assets containing more than 2,600 units with an aggregate cost of over $350 million, and acquired subordinated and distressed debt with an aggregate loan balance of $232 million secured by 35,100 multifamily units.

In 2003, Kinzelberg joined Mesirow Stein Real Estate, one of the largest and most established residential and commercial developers in Chicago at the time. He was responsible for financial analysis and due diligence for new acquisitions and development opportunities, and secured more than $790 million of debt and equity capital for commercial and residential developments throughout Chicago.

Kinzelberg received a master of business administration from Columbia University in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in applied economics from Cornell University in 1994. In addition, Kinzelberg is a member of the Board of Directors of SGA Youth & Family Services, a nonprofit organization that helps children, families, and communities who face great challenges to realize their potential.
