João Luís Carrilho da Graça graduated with a degree in architecture from the School of Fine Arts at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1977. He currently lives and works in Lisbon. His body of work has been recognized with several awards, including a medal from l’Academie d’Architecture Française (2012); title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic (2010); Prémio Pessoa (2008); Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic (1999); AICA Award - International Association of Art Critics (1992).

Carrilho da Graça has taught at the School of Architecture at the Universidade de Lisboa (1977–92 and 2014), where in 2013 he received an honoris causa doctorate degree; at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (2001–10), Universidade de Évora (2005–13) where he was responsible for the creation of the Ph.D. program in architecture, and was visiting professor at the School of Architecture at the Universidad de Navarra (2005, 2007, 2010, and 2014).
