Hugh Hayden wins $20,000 SOM Foundation fellowship
Hugh Hayden (B.Arch. ’07) has been named the winner of the Skidmore Owings & Merrill Foundation’s Travel Fellowship, a $20,000 prize, to pursue his research. The fellowship enables an outstanding graduating student to travel and pursue independent study after graduation.
Hayden says that he is planning to use the fellowship to document the formal and functional relationships between food, architecture, and design in the United States, Japan, France, and Spain, with the goal of creating a collection of “food and architecture pairings.” Hayden’s research will involve interviewing the world’s top chefs, experiencing their cuisines, and analyzing the spaces in which they occur, as well as surveying local and regional purveyors, foodstuffs, and culinary practices.
