Gaskins to Chair Panel at College Art Association Conference
Visiting Associate Professor Bill Gaskins, art, has been selected to chair a panel at the upcoming national conference of the College Art Association in New York City.
Titled After Emory: Redefining Art & Art History in the American University, the panel will be situated as a live think tank focused on posing trenchant, challenging, and necessary questions towards expanding the pedagogical, curricular, conceptual and contextual possibilities of fine art in the context of the university and beyond. The panel's title is gleaned from Emory University's decision to close their visual arts department in the fall of 2012.
"I think there's been a great deal of denial and avoidance of this problem in visual arts departments," Gaskins said in a recent article in Art Papers. "If art departments cannot adapt, Emory will not be the last university to close its arts department."
After Emory will be held on Saturday, February 14 at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel. Those unable to attend can follow the panel on Twitter with #AfterEmory.
