Sophie Goldstein: Tailbone
Exhibition Abstract
Tailbone is an exhibition that explores and displays the manipulation of permanent materials into organic forms. Tailbone consists of a variety of handmade abstract stone and clay sculptures. Three different stones are used in the sculptures throughout the exhibition: alabaster, soapstone, and marble. Each stone sculpture is hand-carved with a chisel and mallet and is eventually sanded and polished to create a shiny surface. Tailbone will also display a 7ft steel and wood chaise lounge chair for visitors to sit on. The clay pieces within the exhibition have skeletal qualities, which influenced the exhibition's name.
Exhibitor Biography
Sophie Goldstein (B.F.A. '25) is a senior B.F.A. student from New York City specializing in sculpture and furniture design. Goldstein works with various materials within her sculptural practice, such as stone, metal, wood, and clay. Goldstein's love for sculpture led to her pursuing stone carving due to the permanence of the material and the labor and tradition involved in using it. After completing multiple stone series, Goldstein has been in the process of designing and constructing a lounge chair that will later be paired with a side table.
