Every year, the NOMA (National Organization of Minority Architects) Student Design Competition challenges students to restore specific sites of erasure and tension in different Black communities while navigating the complexities of urban historical injustice in cities across the country. As a way to structure the approach and discussions around the topics covered in the competition, this exhibition intends to unpack the depth of research and thoughtful design considerations presented in the winning Cornell NOMAS project proposal. As an extension of the seminar course titled Restorative Justice: Confronting Spatial Dichotomies, this exhibition displays the conceptual approach of using carving as a method of memory activation and engaging with the rich histories of Portand's Hill Block site.
