Abstract
Eye Contact is the product of a year of printmaking by Anton Nazarenko (’28), during which several questions frequently surfaced in his work, namely: How does denied or withdrawn eye contact challenge the viewer’s perceived importance? How does it feel to observe a subject that refuses to look back? What is the role of eye contact in creating subordination and dynamics of inequality in interpersonal relationships? How can the architecture of the body — contours of the face, rims of glasses, silhouette of the shoulders, adjacent bodies in a crowd — attenuate or accentuate the directness of eye contact?
