Please review and complete the form below with the faculty member who will be supervising the independent study.
Guidelines:
Students study independently — but under the supervision of faculty — for several reasons. In particular:
- They wish to study something which is not taught in the existing curriculum, or
- They wish to design and carry out their own fieldwork or experiments.
The faculty encourages such independent study and is usually enthusiastic about the active and personal teaching and learning in generates.
- For 1 or 2 credits, the written work may be a series of short assignments, project reports, a compilation of data, or short design problem,
- For 3 credits, for example, students may produce a detailed report that includes critical bibliographic work and an explication of the context of a particular study, or a design equivalent to a six- or eight-week studio project. In some cases, the project itself replaces the written results of research.
In all cases, something to be reviewed must be produced. Credit will not be awarded for experience alone.
Prerequisites are required for all independent study classes. Below, please select the independent study you wish to enroll in and confirm that you have completed the prerequisites.
Please bring the signed form to Student Services for processing and confirmation of prerequisites.
