Yashua Klos: Artist Lecture

Abstract

Visual artist Yashua Klos, known for his innovative approach to collage and printmaking, presents a lecture on the artistic value of filtering life experience through creative practices. Klos will point out the very early experiences in his life, as well as recent life-changing events, that have fueled his imagery and output. His research through these experiences would materialize into his most ambitious work, a 40’ x 17’ collage of his family tree. This work was not only the anchor piece in his first solo museum exhibition, OUR LABOUR (2023), at the Wellin Museum of Art, but he has since used it as a vehicle around which to assemble family and ritual. Apart from the artist’s role as storyteller, this lecture examines the value of creative collaboration and community. Klos will unveil the initial steps in forming the artist collective, thewarmthofmanysuns, as well as their first upcoming collaborative project.

Biography

Yashua Klos

Yashua Klos (born 1977, Chicago, Illinois) received his B.F.A. from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb (2000) and his M.F.A. from Hunter College, City University of New York (2009). The artist’s first major institutional exhibition, Yashua Klos: OUR LABOUR, curated by Tracy Adler, was presented at the Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, in 2022.

Klos’s work is included in the public collections of the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. He has been awarded residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center, New Orleans (2022); the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont (2014); and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, Nebraska (2012). Klos is the recipient of a 2015 New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship and a 2014 Joan Mitchell Foundation grant. He lives in Queens and works in Brooklyn, New York.
