Abstract

Models of Collecting: Museum or Storehouse?

This lecture will compare two approaches to collecting and displaying objects: one old, one new. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s recent expansion to East London will highlight how resources, storage space, curatorial expertise, and public interest impact acquisitions strategy. Public-facing and behind-the-scenes examples will help us unpack the realities not only of collecting new objects, but maintaining a collection in perpetuity. The refurbishment and rethink around the V&A’s Architecture Gallery will bring these considerations, not to mention challenges, together in an immediate way.
