Abstract

Planet Stranger explores the female figure’s relationship to the natural landscape. The artist draws from her own love for the land, and her hope for a more empathetic world, as well as feminist scholarship, poetry, and the embodied process of making. Through film photography, printmaking, handmade paper, and drawing, this exhibition dreams up an imagined utopia, one where the line between animal and human blurs.

Biography

Melaina Thompson

Melaina Thompson (B.F.A. ’26) was born in Pittsburgh, PA. Working primarily in print media, her practice explores ideas of interdependence, kinship, and empathy between female avatars and the natural world. She uses process-based and craft mediums, such as paper and bookmaking, to question the often gendered denigration of these mediums. In addition to being a visual artist, Melaina is a writer and often incorporates her own writing into her work.

Melaina has exhibited her work in Ithaca, NY, and her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. You are most likely to find her in the intaglio studio working on her latest etching.
