Abstract
In To The Very Edge, first-year M.F.Aa students Yun Hsiang (Sandy) Wang & Faye Pamintuan visualize the process of grounding themselves within new environments. As artists who are constantly in transition between multiple cities and environments, both question the permeability of boundaries — be it physical, emotional, or psychological. Furthermore, challenging the agencies and authority of who or what confines a space are similar threads in their art practices. The works explore which elements tether a person to domestic spaces, feelings of intimacy, and familiarity with their environment.
Biographies
Yun Hsiang (Sandy) Wang (M.F.A. '26)
Taiwanese visual artist Yun Hsiang (Sandy) Wang (M.F.A. ’26) grew up immersed in traditional Taiwanese society until 2019, when she moved to New York City to pursue her education. Since then, she has frequently traveled between Taiwan and the U.S., an experience that has prompted her to question her sense of domestic space. With a background in photography, Wang’s work focuses on experimental photography and site-specific installations, exploring expressions of embodiment. Her journey is fueled by questions like “Who am I, truly?” and “Do I exist?”—a search that has become a visual hunt for fragments of what she calls “I.”
Faye Pamintuan (M.F.A. '26)
Filipino-American artist Faye Pamintuan (M.F.A. ’26) balances her time between Texas, Manila, and, currently, Ithaca. She paints imagined scenes at the cusp of transformation. Utilizing watercolor and ink on paper, her forms are derived from the flora and fauna she encounters on her hikes. For the exhibition, both artists will challenge themselves to explore different material processes tangent to their current practice.
