Interview Essay Guidelines

The B.Arch. interview essay, like the in-person interview evaluation, is often the first aspect of the application that is read, and as such is your opportunity to make a first impression. Use this essay to identify your voice, the things you care about, the very personal reasons that you are passionate about architecture, and the specific experiences that have led you to apply to Cornell AAP.

Your B.Arch. interview essay should cover topics that you are not already discussing in either of your other application essays. It should be no more than two pages. You must submit the essay to by the appropriate application deadline.

First-year deadlines:

  • Early Decision: November 1
  • Regular Decision: January 2

Transfer deadlines

  • Spring applicants: October 1
  • Fall applicants: March 1

The interview essay should only be used as an alternative in cases where an applicant absolutely cannot schedule a faculty or alumni interview (due to distance, illness, or family emergency). Applicants who are close to Ithaca or have alumni interviewers in their area are expected to complete an in-person or virtual interview, not the essay.
