Collecting Contemporary Art and Founding the Nomas Foundation

Cornell in Rome Fall 2012 Lecture Series

Stefano and Raffaella Sciarretta began collecting Italian Pop Art in the early 1990s. Soon after, they developed an interest in young and emerging Italian artists, a category often ignored by the commercial art market. As they developed their collection, the Sciarrettas became interested in the work of international artists, in their personal narrative and in stylistic regionalism. These very different artistic interests have resulted in a personal and varied collection of 400 works by more than 200 artists. Through their Nomas Foundation the collectors support the artists by promoting their projects and helping them to gain visibility within the contemporary art system.
