For nearly 30 years Cornell in Rome’s international education program has extended the university’s reputation across the Atlantic. A transformative experience for talented undergraduate artists, architects, and urbanists, the program provides access to faculty and resources equal to those found on Cornell’s U.S. campuses.
The semester-long program is open to non-Cornell (“visiting”) students in the disciplines of architecture, visual arts, and urban studies, as well as related fields such as art history, landscape architecture, classics, international studies, medieval studies, and sociology. The program is open to Cornell students from the colleges: AAP; Human Ecology; Agriculture and Life Sciences; Hotel Administration; Engineering; and Industrial and Labor Relations. All courses are taught in English and designed for third or fourth year students.
Courses are offered both fall and spring semesters in architectural design, history and theory, studio art, art history, contemporary Italian culture, and Italian language. The spring roster also includes courses in urban studies and European politics.
Students may apply to the architecture design studio (portfolio required), art studio (portfolio required), or urban studies track. A liberal studies track is also available with access to all classes except the main studios and workshops, which are for majors only.
Courses make use of Rome’s wealth of museums, archaeological sites, historical and contemporary art collections, churches, and public spaces while an extensive field trip program draws upon the country’s historic legacy. The program offers a dynamic lecture series featuring contemporary architects, artists, and planners. With a maximum enrollment of 60 students each semester, students benefit from an intimate environment that gives ample opportunity to know one another and their instructors.
Cornell in Rome's resident faculty are chosen from internationally known scholars, critics, architects, and artists — all experts in using the city as a resource for instruction and inspiration. Additionally, distinguished Cornell faculty from the architecture, art, and city and regional planning departments in Ithaca, live and teach in Rome during the semester.
The program’s studios and classrooms are in Palazzo Lazzaroni, a handsomely restored 17th-century building in the historic center of Rome. Large, furnished student apartments, with wifi, house all undergraduates and are within easy walking distance of the palazzo.
As residents living in the center of Rome, students enjoy daily contact with the urban life of a European city with nearly 3,000 years of history and its extraordinary backdrop of traditional and contemporary art and architecture.
