Liana Miuccio

Visual artist Liana Miuccio uses photography and videography to explore identity, memory, and migration. Miuccio is a dual citizen of Italy and the USA, was raised in New York, and currently lives in her birth city of Rome. She received her B.A. degree in Humanities from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a master's degree in cinema, video, and television at the University of Roma Tre. Miuccio was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy of Rome in fall 2022 and is also an Arts Advisor at the American Academy in Rome.

Miuccio's recent solo exhibition in 2023 at the Galleria D'Arte Moderna in Rome was sponsored by the American Academy in Rome and Temple University Rome. Other solo exhibitions include La Casa della Memoria/FOTOGRAFIA Internazionale in Rome, the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in New York, Villa Trabia, Palermo, Sicily, and the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. 

Her photographs have been published in numerous publications including the New York Times, the Financial Times, Vogue, the Boston Globe, the Globe and Mail, Repubblica's "D", Il Corriere della Sera, l'Espresso, and L'Internazionale. Miuccio's photographs are also in the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York.

Classes (Selected)

  • ART 1602 Introduction to PhotographyDrawing on Rome's historic and contemporary resources for inspiration, this course introduces photography as a means to visual interpretation and authorship. It addresses concepts essential to lens based artistic practice, as well as the technical foundations of digital photography. In this course students learn about diverse approaches to image making with the camera, and develop a body of work referencing their Rome experience. The course includes lectures, critiques, studio assignments, and visits to museums, galleries, and photography studios.
