Student Profile

The parameters of this project required students to manipulate 2"x4" wood studs to create a space in relation to the (re)interpretation of the typical light construction technique, called a Balloon Frame. The project, which is a combination of elements and 2"x4" studs, varies slightly in the number of elements depending on the location of the axis. As a result, the space continuously creates various pathways, and renders a visual effect of a minimal body of movement. (ARCH 5113 Design Studio with Visiting Associate Professor Jim Williamson)

These 3D models were generated from research on the topological diagram. Students were encouraged to explore the topological diagram, which is utilized as a principal methodology in contemporary architecture. By setting up the rules of parametric visualization, the diagram becomes an effective interface and a procedure to translate between 2D and 3D. The project also questions how architects can collect the proper volumes from the vast data of the site context. This process was the basis for the next step -- the court house community. A Modern Monument is designed for the Juvenile Court House Community in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn. As its paradoxical program name suggests, the building should perform as both a juvenile center and community house simultaneously. Through research on the volume study and topology research, we concluded that the inner side of the building should be inverted in order to be open to the public, and that the surface of the building should be pushed inside to become the core structure in order to hold the volumes. The building serves as a juvenile house and as a new cultural venue in the urban context; the pieces become an art shop, a public parking garage, a sports center, a dormitory, a public auditorium, and an educational workshop space. Since graduating with a B.F.A. degree from the University of Seoul, Korea in 2007, Hyun Chung spent the past four years traveling through East Asia before traveling to the United States. The M.Arch.1 program at Cornell is the latest segment on his journey to amplify and blend his various cultural experiences into his career as an architect.

Hyun Chung is interested in the habits of users, both in analog and digital spaces, as well as the attitude of architects who apply forms and messages onto social and urban contexts. The chosen three projects showcased on his works page are pulled from his 1st and 2nd years of the M.Arch.1 program. Each project aims primarily at rethinking the issue of scale between site and architecture through virtual space. At the same time, he carefully focuses on dealing with the built environment and conventional construction processes for the representation of the works in reality.
