All master's and doctoral degree applicants who have studied in the United States must submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test taken within the last two years. All applicants are urged to take the test as early as possible, preferably in October, to be considered for fellowships. Information about the times and places of test administration can be obtained directly from the Educational Testing Service.
All foreign applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) by arrangement with the
Educational Testing Service. Foreign students who have studied at an English-speaking university must submit GRE scores. There are no fixed admission requirements; however, grades, class standing, TOEFL/GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose, considered collectively, must indicate superior scholastic ability, motivation, and potential.
English Language Proficiency
Students for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate sufficient competency in English by taking the TOEFL examination and submitting the results as part of their admission application. A minimum score of 600 is desirable for the paper-based exam and 250 for the computer-based exam. Those whose mastery of English is below average are urged to take formal coursework either before or during their residency at Cornell. The University offers extensive coursework in English language instruction.
