Community and economic development activities focus on economic development plans, community development, special needs of poor and segregated communities, use of quantitative and qualitative methods to address social inequalities, and the politics of planning.

Progressive Planning is the magazine of Planners Network, an association of planners and others concerned with social and environmental justice. The organization's main office is housed in the department.
Restructuring Local Government provides information for local governments and is done in collaboration with Cornell's Cooperative Extension.
UNESCO Growing Up in Cities Program (2005–08) includes opportunities in the U.S. and Africa.
