The Cornell Journal of Architecture 9: Mathematics: From the Ideal to the Uncertain

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
While mathematics in architecture has historically referenced notions of order, proportion, and ideal form, the discipline of mathematics itself has shifted to encompass uncertainty, incompleteness, relativity, and chaos, moving towards a situation in which truth itself is elusive. This adjustment emerged in part from an engagement with real phenomena, in which natural systems were shown to behave non-linearly and unpredictably.

In architecture, while computational developments enabling dynamic and variable modeling have been subsumed into our culture of design and production, perhaps a new kind of idealism has emerged. Formally prolific and inherently multiplicitous, this new idealism proposes algorithmic truth and statistical outcomes over predetermined objectives; it signifies a retreat away from reality and back towards simulation in the smooth space of possibility.

Meanwhile, the consequences of uncertainty have pervaded our culture to its core. Recovering from the initial high of fractal and random geometrical proficiency, architecture is just beginning to re-embrace the underlying issues embedded within this contemporary mathematics: uncertainty, unpredictability, chance, recursion, wildness, and informality.

Submissions Guidelines
The Cornell Journal of Architecture accepts original, previously unpublished work, including drawings, images, and writing.

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2011

Articles exist in two formats:
  1. “Essays” can vary in length, but are usually not more than 3,000 words. The creative and deliberate use of images is essential. This journal considers words and images to carry equal weight.
  2. “Shorts” serve as breathers in the text and are limited to a one page spread. Images should dominate in this segment.
Text must be edited for clarity and formatted in accordance with The Chicago Manual of Style. Spelling should follow American convention. Text should be saved as Microsoft Word or RTF format.

Images should be sent as TIFF files with a resolution of at least 300 dpi at 7-3/4" x 9" print size (or 15-1/2" x 9 for spread). Image captions and credits must be included with submissions. It is the responsibility of the author to secure permissions for image use for both print and electronic publication and to pay any reproduction fees. The format of one journal page is 7-3/4” (wide) x 9” (tall).

Please include a short (50 words) biography of each author.

All submissions must be submitted electronically, via email to cjoa@cornell.edu. The editors reserve the right to decline or postpone publication of any submission at any time.

Please send all correspondence to cjoa@cornell.edu.
