June 15, 2010
Recent graduate, Savina Kalkandzhieva (M.Arch. ’09) has received a 2010 :output award for City Densifiers, a work created during the Speculative Urbanizations – Viv(e) Las Vegas! studio in spring 2009. The studio was taught by Leyre Asensio-Villoria and David Syn Chee Mah, visiting lecturers in architecture.City Densifiers examines the critical built conditions in Las Vegas — many of which substitute the surrounding desert environment with sprawl and “lifestyled communities” and are also shaped by rapid population growth, foreclosures, and ecological issues. The project explores the formation of denser clusters, allowing for the areas between them to be taken back by the desert.
